General Information on Water Sports

water sportsWater sports are becoming increasingly popular as a recreational pastime and are enjoyed by people of all ages and physical ability. There are various types of water sports which can be carried out at sea or within confined inland water bodies, and also a number of clubs and associations which provide expert instruction and training on boat handling skills and water sport lessons.

Some general information on water sports can be found in the Holderness District Wide Local Plan, adopted in 1999. Canoeing

Canoeing is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and physical ability. Taken to the competitive level or carried our for recreational pleasure, canoeing is a popular sport.

jet skiJet Skiing

Jet skiing can be carried out on the open water or within designated enclosed water bodies. They are user friendly, easy to transport and easy to launch. By late 1998 it was estimated that there were over 18,000 PWC in the UK, being used by a considerably greater number of riders. Sailing has been a popular sport in England and Wales since the 18th century. It is now become very popular with all ages and a number of clubs exist within the East Riding of Yorkshire both along the Holderness coast and within the Humber estuary. Surfing

One sport which has strong east coast roots back to the 1960s is surfing. A key centre in the early days was Withernsea, although today many locations up down the coastline are regularly surfed. The best waves are surfed between autumn to early spring after and during the northerly winds cycles.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing has become one of the most popular water sports in Britain. It is estimated that 600,000 people were enjoying the sport in the mid 1990s. The Royal Yachting Association says: "Blasting along at 50mph, leaping 40ft waves, or simply enjoying the scenery whilst cruising a local lake, this is a sport for all." The safest way of getting started is to take a course on an enclosed water, as at least you will eventually reach the other side.

Water skiing can be enjoyed either at the coast on the sea or on inland water bodies. There are a number of accredited clubs within the East Riding of Yorkshire who will teach you the correct techniques to keep both you and the general public safe.
