Local Organisations
ICZM Archaeology and The Historic Environment Working Group
The group comprises representatives from a number of organisations
in the Yorkshire region that have an interest in the management
of the coastal and maritime zones. Amongst the organisations represented
are the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the University of Hull,
English Heritage, Humber Archaeological Partnership, the Sub Aqua
Association and Group, Fortress Study Group, the Bridlington and
Flamborough Fishermen's Association and the East Riding Archaeology
Society.
The aims of the group are to raise awareness of the archaeology
and historic environment of the East Riding of Yorkshire Coast.
At present this is being undertaken via the development of a web
site and terms of reference, and by assisting interested parties
in their efforts at gaining funding, undertaking outreach activities
and researching the region wherever possible. A number of profile
raising initiatives are currently being developed by the group,
and in March, the University of Hull will host a meeting whereby
the receiver of wrecks will discuss aspects of underwater archaeology
with local sub-aqua groups.
It is hoped that the group will be able to provide a focus for
local and regional organisations to come together in a unified way
that enhances the profile of the archaeology and historic environment
of the region. Collaboration is currently under way between the
Humber Partnership and University of Hull on a grant proposal to
produce an integrated study and archive of the archaeological and
maritime resource of the region.

Yorkshire Vernacular Building Study Group
Vernacular architecture is that which is typical for an area or
a region. Yorkshire has a wide variety of vernacular buildings,
from the yeoman-clothier houses of the West Riding, to the field
barns of Swaledale and Wensleydale, and the brick farmsteads of
the East Riding. By studying buildings in detail, and using documentary
and oral evidence from a variety of sources, the Yorkshire Vernacular
Buildings Study Group is building up a picture of the different
styles of local architecture. The group aims to support all those
interested in studying the vernacular architecture of Yorkshire.
