Publications & Coastal Information for the East Riding Area

The East Riding coastal zone covers over 160.93 kilometres of mainly rural coast and estuary (the Humber), with some of the fastest erosion rates in Europe. There has therefore been a lot of studies carried out in this area resulting in a wealth of information being freely available. Sustainable development is therefore being carried out under the East Riding Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Plan, in addition to the setting up of a Coastal Forum for the area. Information on the Humber and the East Riding coastline can be accessed from the links below.

Humber Estuary and CoastPublications

Humber Estuary & Coast

Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS), 1994.
This report by IECS, produced in 1994 for Humberside County Council, provides an overview of the current knowledge on coastal processes and landforms in the Humberside and Lincolnshire coastal zone. The section on the Holderness coast provides information on the geology and physical processes operating at the coast, rates of erosion and coastal defence measures.

Humber Estuary & Coast - Management Issues

Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS), 1994.
This report provides guidance to assist coastal planners, managers, engineers and environmental scientists involved in the management of the Humberside coastline.

Humber Estuary - Environmental Background

This report summarises the existing environmental data on the Humber estuary. Production of the report was co-ordinated by the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies at the University of Hull. In December 1984, when Shell UK Limited were awarded a licence to search for oil and gas in the Humber estuary, it was apparent that the land and aquatic environments were already under considerable human pressure. This report was commissioned to address the environmental, biological and socio-economic issues relevant in the Humber estuary.

Humber Bibliography

The Humber bibliography is a comprehensive database of references relating to the physical and biological characteristics and features of the Humber estuary and Holderness coast, as well as land use in and around the estuary, including the tidal rivers and coast from Skegness to Scarborough. ICZM planIntegrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (ICZM)

East Riding of Yorkshire Council Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (ICZM) is a document laying out a framework to address the many issues relating to the coastal zone. It brings together decision makers to allow social, economic and environmental issues to be addressed in an integrated and sustainable manner for the long term management of the coast.
