Bridlington is one of the major towns along the Holderness coast
and within the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a population in 1991
of 32,163. The town provides a large range of facilities and services
to the area although it still functions largely as a tourist destination.
In recent years the council has sought to widen the employment base
of the town by encouraging industrial development on the Bessingby
and Carnaby Industrial Estates. The East Coast railway, which first
led to the growth of Bridlington as a tourist resort in 1845 is
still running, providing quick travel to the main stations of Hull
and York. The popularity of Bridlington as a place to retire is
reflected in the large proportion of elderly people who live in
the town (HRWLP, 1999).
