The
East Riding coastal zone has a considerably rich archaeological
resource ranging from Mesolithic habitation sites to Bronze Age
burial mounds. Most of an extensive system of Roman signal stations
on the coast has already been lost due to erosion. The post-medieval
sites include lighthouses, coastguard stations, remains associated
with the fishing industry, and a wealth of military installations,
including major 20th-century defensive works and radar stations.
The links below provide specific information on Sewerby Hall and
the buried cliff at Sewerby north east of Bridlington.
Buried Cliff at Sewerby
Between 116,000 and 128,000 years ago, prior to the deposition
of the Pleistocene tills of Holderness, the Yorkshire coast ran
westwards of the current coastline running on a curving line running
just to the west of Driffield, Beverley and Cottingham. Traces of
the former coastal cliff can be traced at Sewerby, just to the north-east
of Bridlington. To find out more about the buried cliff at Sewerby
follow this link.
Sewerby Hall
Sewerby Hall and gardens is set in 50 acres of early 19th century
parkland and is situated in a dramatic cliff-top position, forming
the gateway to the Flamborough Heritage Coast. For more information
