Back to Post-Doctoral Research Fellows
Originally from Peterborough, I came to Hull in 1992 where I studied for my degree in Chemistry. I graduated in 1995 and joined the liquid crystal group where I carried out research towards my PhD. The thesis I produced is entitled, "The synthesis and electro-optical studies of liquid crystal oxetanes and related polymers".
Since 1998 I have been a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the university carrying out research in a wide variety of topics. During my time at Hull I have carried out research on Side-chain liquid crystal polymers, low molar mass liquid crystals, the synthesis of novel core groups for highly polarisable nematic liquid crystals, ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystals and photoluminescent polymers. I have also learnt to use equipment to measure the electro-optical and switching properties to characterise ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystals. Through this research I have also gained experience in mixture studies and microscopy and have gained lots of experience at oral presentations. I regularly give presentations on basic liquid crystals as part of the university admissions open days and school visits. A full list of my publications to date is incorporated into my CV. Currently I am setting up a new electro-optics laboratory in the group to enable greater characterisation of ferroelectric/antiferroelectric liquid crystals and mixtures. |
