Accessibility

What steps are we taking to ensure our websites are accessible?

At The University of Hull we continually look for ways to improve the accessibility of our websites, recently this has seen us do the following:

• Ensure the Public Website (PWS) adheres to WAI ( (External) World Accessibility Initiative ) guidelines, the majority of our pages conform to at least stage 1 priority standard
• We have developed accessible web pages by working with visually impaired colleagues at The University of Hull who have proved invaluable in helping us identify accessibility problems, this method is preferable than using on-line validators exclusively
• Future developments includ eworking in conjunction with visually impaired colleagues to provide stylesheets that can be downloaded and used on users pcs
• Our web pages conform to W3C ( (External) Worldwide Web Consortium ) web standards for CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and HTML 4.01 Transitional
• Constantly developing the information architecture to ensure the website is easy to navigate and find relevant information
• Making navigation and information architecture consistent throughout the website by utilising a Content Management System

Faculty and Departmental Websites

We have begun implementing a web policy across the University to improve the accessibility and usability of all Faculty and Departmental websites - the aim is to ensure all websites in the hull.ac.uk domain conform to (External) WAI accessible standards.

This is an ongoing process and will be completed in phases. The First and Second phase targeting all websites currently in the CMS (Content Management System) and then looking at those websites utilising other editors.
