Agriculture and sustainable resource use,
my thesis is about smallholder farming in Malawi and the use of trees on
farms. |
 |
Rapidly increasing population densities in
Malawi have put a huge strain on the existing agricultural land. This has
led to agricultural expansion at the expense of the country’s woodlands.
Smallholder agriculture is the dominant economic activity of Malawi’s
rural population, and many farmers have been forced to cultivate marginal
lands with less fertile soils. |
 |
Trees on farms provide both products and
services. They yield food, firewood, building materials and medicine; and
they also replenish organic matter and nutrient levels in soils. They
help to control erosion and can conserve water. |

Suzanne Clisby is the Director of the Masters
programme in Gender and Development at the University of Hull.
Her research interests fall both within the
field of Gender and Development and more broadly in the areas of poverty,
participation, environmental issues, land use and indigenous rights.
Latin America is her particular area
specialism where she has conducted research focusing on gender, indigenous
peoples and political participation in Bolivia, female-headed households and
community survival strategies in Honduras and environment, land use and
identity in Costa Rica.
Within a UK context she has also been
involved in six policy- oriented research projects since 2000, conducting
empirical research in the areas of youth, gender, poverty, sexual health,
young parenting and political participation. She is interested in the
interface between discourses of ‘social policy’ in Western contexts and
‘development’ in non-Western contexts. She has recently completed a two-year
team study for the Department of Health focusing on young people and sexual
health in rural and coastal areas across the UK. Her teaching at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels focuses on gender, development,
poverty and international politics in both global and Latin American
contexts.
