This guide brings together information on the archives and manuscripts held by Hull University Archives which relate to the broad subject of women's studies. It cannot claim to be exhaustive, for there are many items (by the likes of Florence Nightingale, Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher) too numerous to list here. Landed family and estate papers in particular contain many title deeds, copies of wills, diaries, accounts, commonplace books and letters of and by women, which can often be overlooked or difficult to trace. Outstanding individual items include the seminal work entitled 'The Lady's Answer to a Divorce, or, A Vindication of the Honourable State of Matrimony', by Lady Mary Mordaunt (daughter and heiress of Henry, Earl of Peterborough), who divorced Henry Howard, seventh Duke of Norfolk in 1700 [DDEV/68/154]. Miscellaneous collections include a series of letters addressed to the Headmistress of Northumberland Avenue School, Hull, during its evacuation to Bridlington between 1939 and 1940 [DX/164/1]. The aim is to help researchers to indentify useful sources more easily.
