Pressure Group Archives Subject Guide

Victory for Socialism

This campaign group was originally established in 1943 to promote 'true' socialism within the Labour Party and was soon said to have the support of over 100 MPs. The Group was re-constituted in 1958 with Frederick Messer MP as President, and its main support came from the former supporters of Nye Bevan, including Michael Foot. They were particularly critical of Hugh Gaitskell's leadership, and strong supporters of nuclear disarmament. VFS was dissolved shortly before the 1964 election.

Hull University Archives holds a small collection of papers relating to this group within the photocopied papers of Sir Frederick Messer. They cover the period 1958-1961. [DX/84/18-19]
