National Minority Movement

Founded in 1924, the NMM consisted of committees made up of militant members of existing trade unions. An offshoot of the Communist Party of Great Britain, the NMM aimed to revolutionise the policy, structure and outlook of the trade union movement. Various trade union branches and trades councils affiliated to the NMM, especially from within the transport, railway and engineering industries.  Its influence within the trade union movement waned after the General Strike in 1926.

The small collection relating to the NMM held by the Archives covers the period 1924-1929. It includes three letters, with one from Harry Pollitt regarding the programme of action for 1929, and a copy of the manifesto for the May 1929 General Election [DX/218].  The Library also holds over 30 NMM publications, including its Constitution (1927), and the 1st-6th Annual Conference Reports, 1924-1929.
