Letters, diaries and autobiographical writings

The Archives hold a wide variety of letters, diaries, autobiographies and memoirs, with examples from the 18th to the 20th centuries, composed by men and women from all walks of life, including members of the landed gentry, politicians, business people, members of the armed forces, writers, political activists and travellers.  Most of this material is unpublished, but there are a few cases, such as John Courtney’s diaries, where material has been edited for publication and comparisons can therefore be made between manuscript and published versions.
