Marten family

All the papers in this collection relate to Thomas Marten (d.1868) who was Lieutenant-Colonel in the 1st Dragoons serving in Ireland from 1835. He married Caroline Harriet Ellison (d.1882) whose father left her a considerable inheritance. They had no children and their papers came into the hands of their solicitor. These include personal and household accounts, wills and a large number of papers, including correspondence, relating to the military career of Thomas Marten in the Royal Dragoons. There is a bundle of papers concerning the Chartist riots in Sheffield 1839-1840. Letters to Caroline Harriet Marten are about her property and local families [DDCV/216].
