John Conyers Hudson, of Beverley

The Conyers family lived in Helmsley from at least the seventeenth century. John Conyers Hudson was descended from a junior branch of the family through the female line. His great great grandfather was John Conyers of Helmsley, the father-in-law of Jane Conyers, whose household account book is noticed separately. John Conyers Hudson (1789-c.1860) was the seventh son of Ann Conyers (1753-1829) and Robert Hudson (1751-1814). Robert Hudson was a clerk at East India House, a profession taken up by his son and there is a small amount of correspondence in the collection relating to the East India Company. They were also both involved in Anglican church life and the cash book for the Church Missionary Society for Beverley 1839-1846 is in the collection. John Conyers Hudson married Mary Fothergill. His papers include a few estate papers, letters from the early part of his career and several diaries from his later married life. His son, Conyers Hudson (1821-1850), joined the church and two small diaries survive [DDCV/212].
