Landed Family and Estate Papers Subject Guide

Dunning family, of Walkington and Beverley

The Dunning family had branches in Beverley, Walkington, Cherry Burton and Bishop Burton and seem to have been farmers, millers and small-time landowners. The circa 100 estate papers of this collection relate mainly to Ralph Dunning (d.1865) who may have been the son of Robert John Dunning and his wife, Betty, of Bishop Burton. When Ralph Dunning died his estates, which included 'The Anchor Inn' in Beckside, Beverley, passed to his nephew, Robert Dunning (d.1913). The latter became a major benefactor of Walkington School. The documents include some estate papers and the will of Samuel Shaw, who was schoolmaster from about 1800 until his death in 1833. [DDCV(2)/59]
