About the course
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an increasingly popular method of psychological therapy used to treat mental and physical health problems. This course is designed for mental health professionals including nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, counsellors, doctors and social workers to extend knowledge of CBT theory and practice. Studying this course will enable you to provide CBT to clients with serious mental illness and other conditions.
There are three pathways for studying this programme
- Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for practitioners working in secondary care (part-time 120 credits at level 7)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (route for students taking 60 academic credits at level 7). See below for permitted combinations of the award.
- Individual module* - combinations suited to staff from both secondary care mental health backgrounds or general health and social care services needing a grounding in CBT
For both the PG Diploma and PG Certificate with Clinical Practice – applicants may take a route which allows them to focus on CBT with Psychosis.
Those enrolling on the course will be expected to be members of the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) or other professional body. Candidates who apply to the course without a core professional background will be expected to be members of the BABCP and so endorse the ethical and professional codes of practice of the organisation.

Applicants from the local area accessing programmes and individual modules are eligible for funding via the contract with Yorkshire and The Humber Local Education and Training Board (YHLETB) region. At present, priority is given to applicants from within local services who are eligible for this funding because they work for an NHS provider and serve a population with severe or complex mental health needs. 30 places are available.
Non attendance or non-completion penalties may apply with the student’s employer.
Supervised practice modules will require a service supervisor to be identified or an agreement for funding for university supervision.

Applicants are requested to complete both a University and Course specific application form. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview which will involve a clinical role play. The deadline date for applications is 1 April 2017 for April interviews and 1 May 2017 for June interviews. Study is at academic level 7 so students will usually be expected to have a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent academic study in a discipline connected to mental health and further vocational mental health experience. Applicants with a 2:2 honours degree or those who have not completed an honours degree will be considered on an individual basis using the BABCP Knowledge Skills and Attitudes (KSA) Framework.
Students will be expected to be working for a service with NHS funding which provides mental health care. Priority will be given to those that can demonstrate that they will be able to use their skills to benefit people with serious mental illness.
Students will be expected to have obtained agreement for service release to complete their studies, and should have access to a potential CBT caseload within a clinical setting. During supervised practice modules, students will be required to access in-service CBT supervision and clinical cases suitable for CBT. During the course of the supervision modules it is essential that students obtain support and agreement from their service for the regular video-recording of clinical sessions.

This course requires IELTS 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each skill.
