Our programmes

We offer postgraduate research options across a broad variety of topics ranging from technology enhanced learning and higher education research to themes around leadership, policy and inclusive practices within Education at Hull. Programmes include MEd by Research, MPhil, EdD Professional Doctorate in Education, and PhD. Students explore a range of current educational practice, looking at key issues and policy. Graduates leave with reflective and practical skills and the knowledge they need to contribute to their chosen learning community.

Our highly experienced, research-active team supervises postgraduate students from around the world and research theses have been successfully completed on a wide variety of subjects. Suitable MPhil students can upgrade to the PhD programme with the support of their supervisors. EdD students specialise in one of a number of focused areas of study including, but not restricted to higher education; inclusion and social justice; and professionalism.

Home/EU: £4,195 (full-time) / £2,098 (part-time)

Overseas: £12,800 (full-time)

Home/EU: £3,120 (part-time)

The Postgraduate Training Scheme

It is now widely recognised by employers, professional bodies and research funding agencies that specialist expertise alone is not sufficient preparation either for research or a subsequent career. With this in mind, the University of Hull requires all its postgraduate research students to follow a research training programme relating both to their particular field of study and to generic skills; for example, information technology and communication skills.

Entry requirements

Candidates for the MEd or MPhil are normally expected to hold a first degree, such as a BA, BSc or equivalent.

Candidates for the EdD or PhD are normally expected to have a Masters degree, with an overall average of 60%, in a subject relevant to their proposed research.

PhD applicants must submit a research proposal outlining in detail the area in which they wish to pursue their research.

International students (language requirements)

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

This course requires IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill. For other English language proficiency qualifications acceptable by this University, please click here.
