Mark is a leading international nurse academic with a 20 year track record of high quality nursing and health related research.

He collaborates nationally and internationally on nursing research projects and has a particular interest in reproductive health and adolescent health.

Mark edits the Journal of Advanced Nursing and regularly lectures on academic writing internationally. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Research groups

Professor Hayter belongs to the Maternal and Reproductive Health (MaRH) research cluster at the University of Hull and his research explores a variety of reproductive and adolescent health topics - his current research is a study into LGBT access to primary care.

He has published extensively – with over 60 papers in peer review journals. He has also presented over 60 papers at national and international conferences and has extensive academic contacts in Asia, Australia, the Middle East and the United States.

External roles

Professor Hayter is an editor of the Journal of Advanced Nursing and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of School Nursing, the Journal of Nursing Interventions and Nursing Outlook.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the European Academy of Nursing Science.

Professor Hayter has also served on numerous international scientific committees including the Royal College of Nursing International research conference 2010 & 2012, International School Nurse Conference 2011 and the World Association of Sexology conference 2011.

As an experienced qualitative researcher, he has delivered workshops on writing for publication on six continents.

He has a keen interest in professional standards, and nursing and midwifery regulation, and serves on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Fitness to Practice Investigating Committee.

Professional highlights

Professor Hayter qualified as a nurse in 1987 and after working in several clinical roles he joined the Sheffield School of Nursing in 1991.

From 1995 to 2012 he held academic positions in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sheffield, most recently as Reader in Nursing. He joined the University of Hull in 2012.
