School of Health and Social Work Research

Our researchers work closely with NHS clinicians and social workers to ensure our research is at the forefront of its field and benefits the health and wellbeing of the local community.

Maternal and Reproductive Health (MaRH)

The group has strong links with the NHS and attracts research funding from a range of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and charity streams around maternal and reproductive health.

It conducts research into diverse areas of reproductive, maternal and sexual health, including maternal mental health, teenage pregnancy, sexuality in health care and midwifery practice.

MaRH has attracted about £200,000 of research income since 2013, along with around 30 peer reviews and international journal papers.

Social and Psychological Research into Long Term Health Conditions (SPARC)

This cluster draws together research which explores the experience and impact of living with chronic long-term conditions – a major priority for the health and social care sectors.

SPARC will undertake and disseminate high quality research relevant to social work, social care and clinical practice.

The group will work in collaboration with public representatives, charitable organisations, partner academic institutions, clinical colleagues and industry to achieve its aims.

Centre for Applied Research and Evaluation (CARE)

CARE works alongside people with long-term health and social care needs, their families and those that provide support services to them.

It has expertise in applied research which helps people use existing knowledge and information to improve their lives or to perform their roles more effectively.

The group also evaluates the effectiveness of health and social care services for disabled people and carers, and it offers consultancy services for those looking to improve them.
