Our Research

Our Research

Research in School of Histories, Languages and Cultures brings together researchers working in and across the disciplines of American Studies, History, Modern Languages, and Philosophy.

AMERICAN STUDIES

Our research reflects the rapid historical and cultural development of America, and how in turn American culture represents history.

Our research focusses on three themes:

Censorship, Propaganda and Radicalism in American Culture
The History of Race and Gender in the United States
American Dreams and Nightmares

Our diverse research output ranges from an exploration of the political tensions of the American Revolution to appraising gender roles in US animation. Our research is a rich and varied examination of the world's ultimate super power.

HISTORY

Our established strengths in social, international and economic histories have delivered top rankings in research assessments.

Languages

Research in Modern Languages cuts across traditional language-centred boundaries. Our areas of expertise are grouped into five distinct areas:

Popular cultures
Political and cultural encounters
Gender, sexuality and race
Language learning and teaching
Applied language and linguistics

The Confucius Institute is working towards generating interdisciplinary research in areas such as adaptation and semiotics, and fostering research opportunities between Hull and Tianjin Normal University, our partner university in China.

PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy at Hull has an unusually rich variety of areas of research, ranging from ethics to metaphilosophy. Philosophy staff have been instrumental in establishing successful research centres, including the ground-breaking Centre for Gender Studies (with its Journal for Gender Studies) and the Institute for Applied Ethics.
